BBC Radio Leicester | Fresh Air

Over the past year I have had the opportunity to become a freelance presenter on BBC Radio Leicester. Fresh Air is a show which is presented by students on a monthly rotation. I would present every four months with Alice Arnold.

Each week we would prepare subjects to talk about such as the difficulties of university, our clumsy ways of falling off chairs in the middle of the office and the top trends of the week. We would choose music from the allotted category, that would fit well with the particular show. Alongside this we would include up to four songs from BBC Introducing. This was one of my favourite parts of the show as I love hearing all of the new talent and finding out more about upcoming local bands. A few artists even made it into my current playlist, including Sea Girls and Jake Warner.

Alice and I would plan the show together over the week leading up to our Monday evening slot. We would also drive the desk for our own show. We took this role two weeks at a time so we could both gain the experience. It was quite difficult at first but after a few hours practice we soon got the hang of it and would loved to have been able to carry on the show however there were programming changes made my the head offices.

Fantastic Mr Fox | Kung Fu Style

During my time at University I have perfected my skills in video production and the creation of graphics. Alongside this I have learnt how to capture and process audio to a high standard.

The audio project I am most proud of is my re-dubbing of a scene from Fantastic Mr Fox. I produced extensive sound design documentation redesigning Fantastic Mr Fox into a Kung Fu style sound track. Having created the script and noted down the extra sound effects required I recorded the audio in a sound booth with the use of Pro Tools. Having processed my clips ensuring they were all as clear as possible I perfected the mix and created my own music track to help the scene flow.

Afternoons Producer

In my first year with Demon Media I have been able to become the Assistant Producer with Tom Fair. Being a Co-Producer I was able to help show teams develop their presenting skills, work on recurring segments of their show and improve my own production skills from reflecting on their shows. I made sure I would give each show team verbal constructive feedback after each show as well as written feedback within 4 days after the show had aired.

I’ve been able to see different ways to share your stories as I’m usually a very visual person. I was able to learn a lot and loved seeing all 5 show teams develop over the past 7 months.

A highlight of my time in this role has to be when I produced the outside Broadcasts (OB’s) from the LCB for the Leicester Comedy Festival. Having had training in how to set up the broadcast equipment and helped show teams find comedians and events to talk about we set up for two weeks of comedy, stress and a lot of development. Seeing the wonders OB’s opened my eyes to a new element of Audio Production which I value so much and hope to use in years to come.
